At Steps Conductive Education Centre, we are proud to play an active role in the development of future professionals through our commitment to training and hands-on experience. We welcome students who are training in Conductive Education, Early Years Education, and related fields, offering a supportive and enriching environment where they can learn, observe, and contribute meaningfully.
Our experienced team provides mentoring and practical guidance to help students deepen their understanding of child development, motor disorders, and inclusive education practices. We offer structured placements and work experience opportunities that allow students to engage directly with children and families, gain confidence, and develop valuable skills for their future careers.
By investing in student training, we help shape a knowledgeable, compassionate, and skilled workforce—committed to improving outcomes for children with additional needs.
During the final year of my Early Childhood Studies degree, I had the invaluable opportunity to complete my third-year placement with Steps, a dedicated charity that supports children with motor impairments through specialist early intervention. With aspirations of becoming a play therapist, my time at Steps has been a pivotal part of my professional journey, deepening my understanding of inclusive education and the importance of holistic, child-centred approaches.
From day one, I was welcomed with open arms by a team whose warmth, kindness, and generosity of time and knowledge were truly exceptional. I immediately felt part of a family and close professional community bound by a shared commitment to nurturing each child’s physical, cognitive, and emotional development. The staff’s willingness to support me, answer questions, and offer guidance has been nothing short of inspiring.
The initial induction process was comprehensive, ensuring I had all the necessary information, including placement documentation, health and safety procedures, and an induction checklist. This clarity laid the foundation for a safe and supportive learning experience. Throughout my placement, I received two detailed mentor feedback forms, which provided thoughtful, constructive reflections. These have not only helped me meet academic requirements but have been instrumental in developing my reflective practice, an essential skill in early years education and therapeutic work.
Working in a conductive education setting has offered me a unique insight into the importance of consistency, routine, and targeted intervention in promoting independence and confidence among children with motor impairments. Observing how physical development is supported alongside communication, social interaction, and emotional well-being has enriched my understanding of integrated, person-centred care. Being part of such a nurturing and empowering environment has affirmed my passion for working with children with additional needs and strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in play therapy.
Such was the impact of my experience that I felt inspired to organise a charity quiz night to raise funds for Steps, a small gesture to give back to an organisation that has given me so much. It was a privilege to support their vital work and help contribute to the incredible difference they make in the lives of children and families.
As my placement journey comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on just how much this experience has shaped me, not only as an aspiring practitioner but as a person. Steps has truly been the highlight of my university placements, bringing joy, learning, and an unexpected emotional connection that I will carry with me forever.
This isn’t goodbye, it’s a “see you soon.” I fully intend to stay connected and look forward to visiting whenever I can to maintain the wonderful relationships I’ve built here. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for everything.
